Want to save a life? Foster a rescue pet!

Whether you are looking to help a medical rescue pet get healthy and find a forever home, or you are looking to adopt an already healthy pet, we have someone just for you! Click the Available Pets page to view our adoptable animals, or check out the FAQ’s about fostering below. We ask that foster homes be very specific in what they are able to handle, as we want our fosters to stay happy. A happy foster means a happy pet! We cover all expenses and provide all materials for foster parents. Fill out the form and submit it via the Contact Us tab to help save a life of a death row shelter pet!

  • I have filled out my foster application. Now what?

    Just sit tight! We will get with you as soon as we can about your application! :)

  • I have submitted my application. When can I come to get my new foster pet?

    Submitting an application does not guarantee that your foster application will be approved. Applications must first become approved by evaluating answers and checking references. While fosters are not REQUIRED to be local to College Station, Texas, it is highly recommended. In the event that emergency veterinary care is required, fosters must be within a reasonable distance from Tabor Road Veterinary Hospital or Texas A&M University Small Animal Hospital. Additionally, fosters must be able to attend local adoption events.

  • My application has been approved. Does this mean I can foster this pet now?

    Unfortunately, sometimes we have multiple approved applications on a rescue animal, therefore we have to turn away very worthy homes. However, approved fosters will be put on our Foster Roster to be called upon for a dog that better matches their home environment.

  • What happens if I get approved to foster, but it doesn’t go well when we get home?

    Long Way Home commits to our rescues for life. If, for any reason the fosters cannot keep their rescue pet, fosters are required to return them to our rescue. However, it may take a couple of days to make arrangements for a new home.

  • What do I do if I have to leave town?

    Fosters are responsible for making temporary foster arrangements with Long Way Home or fosters may pay for temporary boarding at Tabor Road Veterinary Hospital by calling 979-778-1144.

  • I think I found the perfect home for my foster dog, who makes the final decision for adoption?

    While we welcome and encourage foster feedback regarding potential forever homes, adoption decisions will be made by Long Way Home. Of course, we love when fosters attend the adoption!

  • What happens if I fall in love with my foster pet? Am I allowed to adopt?

    Yes!! In fact, foster parents get the first right of refusal. Meaning, at any point during the adoption or fostering process, foster parents reserve the right to adopt. Foster homes are considered pre-approved applications and will be given an expedited adoption. If that foster has been in the home longer than two months, Long Way Home will offer the foster a half priced adoption.

  • What does it cost to foster for Long Way Home Adoptables?

    Nothing! Of course, we would love if you sponsored items like dog food and treats, as it means those funds can be used to help another rescue pet, we provide all materials and cover all costs such as veterinary care for the foster, food, treats, bed, toys, crate, etc.
