Thank you for considering to adopt your next family pet from Long Way Home Pit Bull Rescue! We are a foster based rescue that saves, rehabilitates, and places pit bulls facing imminent euthanasia at local shelters in carefully screened, forever loving homes. When you adopt a pit bull from LWH, you are doing two things: 1. providing a second chance (or first for many!) at a forever, loving home; 2. saving another pit bull from imminent euthanasia who we can save and place in one of our marvelous foster homes!

  • I have filled out my adoption application; what happens now?

    Your application has been delivered to our emails and we will begin processing your application on the next business day. We will start by contacting your current veterinary clinic (if you have other animals) to ensure everyone who is medically able is spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations. Then we will speak with one or both of your personal references and give you a call. This process should be completed within 48 hours if not sooner.   • What does it cost to adopt?

    We ask for a minimum donation of $200 to adopt. Healthy adult dogs receive around $450 in care and supplies, and that cost increases depending on what health issues the dog may have. The $200 donation only covers a portion of the costs it takes to rescue a shelter pet, but we believe in making adoptions as affordable as possible. In fact, for puppies too young to spay/neuter, we offer $100 adoptions for families who choose to sponsor the spay/neuter cost at their own veterinary clinics. Adopters who choose this option will sign a spay/neuter contract, and all surgeries must be done by 24 weeks of age, or the adopters will be in violation of the contract and the dog must be returned.   • What is included in my adoption donation?

    With your donation, your future rescue dog will be fully vetted and will have all vaccinations and medical testing that are considered age appropriate. After the adoption, any remaining veterinary care will be the adopter’s responsibility. If your pet is old enough, it will be:
    -- Spayed or neutered (if at least 24 weeks of age).
    -- Microchipped.
    -- Current on the following vaccines: rabies (after 12 weeks old), leptovirus (after 12 weeks old), bordetella, distemper and parvovirus (after 6 week old).
    -- Heartworm tested and current on monthly heartworm prevention. If the dog tested heartworm positive, they will be current on treatment, and that treatment cost will be covered with the vet of our choice until completion, unless the adopter chooses to sponsor that cost independently.
    -- Flea free and on monthly flea prevention.
    -- Dewormed and fecal tested.
    -- Provided with a collar and leash

  • I am not local to Texas; does this disqualify me?

    Absolutely not! We will adopt basically anywhere in North America, but the adopter is responsible for covering any and all transportation costs associated with getting his/her new rescued pit bull to them.

  • I am not local to the Bryan/College Station area; does this disqualify me?

    Absolutely not! We adopt all over the state!

  • My application has been approved; what does this mean?

    Depending on the dog, one of our program directors (Stephanie or Amanda) will carefully decide which dog(s) we feel would be best in your home, taking into consideration the dog(s) you are interested in and the environment your home presents. While you may be approved to adopt from LWH, we may decide that the dog you are interested in would not be a good fit for your home and thus we will ask for you to consider other pit bulls in our program.

    If you are approved to adopt but not for one particular pit bull, we encourage you to look at our other adoptable pit bulls via Petfinder or Facebook; with an approved application, you may be expedited for another rescue pit bull in our program.

  • I'm approved to adopt! What is the next step?

    Yay - congratulations! Amanda or Stephanie will be in contact to schedule a meet and greet and/or the formal adoption date. We will set a date and location (typically the adopter's home) to complete the adoption and will gather all necessary paperwork and forms. When we arrive at your home, we will do a brief home check and address any concerns we may have (such as holes in fencing). Then we will sit down and go over the adoption paperwork which may be as minimal as the standard adoption contract or as extensive as heartworm or spay/neuter agreements. Finally, we will take a family photo to post on our social media!

  • What happens if I get home and the dog is not the right fit?

    All adoptions come with a 5 day grace period in which the animal may be returned to us. The adoption donation will be held during that 5 day grace period, but on the 6th day, it becomes a non-refundable donation. Long Way Home commits to our rescues for life. If, for any reason, adopters cannot keep their rescue pet, adopters are required to return them to our rescue.
